From a houseboat in Amsterdam to a life surrounded by water in Zeewolde. For Dymphy D’Fonseca and her family, it felt like a logical step. And six years on, they are certain: living in Flevoland offers the peace, space and freedom they couldn’t find anywhere else.

Jan and Leny Ras live in the old harbourmaster's house in Urk. Or rather its new version. The original building was demolished years ago and rebuilt in the same style. Jan (60) and Leny (58) have views over the water, the Ketelbrug bridge and life in the harbour.

Born and raised in Amsterdam, but recently settled in Almere: together with her boyfriend, Carlijn van der Baan (30) bought her first home in Almere Poort in September 2024. She says: "You get a lot more house for your money here, you won't find that in Amsterdam, Weesp or Hilversum, for example. Almere has positively surprised us. There are good amenities, lots of greenery and nice restaurants."

Rense is the third generation of Bakker. He was born and raised in the lighthouse house next to the lighthouse. After his grandfather and father, Rense now lives there with his family. He no longer holds the position of lighthouse keeper now, but he still feels a bit responsible.

For years, this couple dreamed of making a living as vineyard owners in Italy. The dream became reality. Only in a different location. They discovered Oosterwold near Almere.

In 2019, Andy Houtkamp and his wife Milanda traded Hoofddorp for Dronten. Quite a switch. "Everyone greets each other here, which seems to be quite normal here. We love this almost village friendliness here".

More about living in Dronten

The AZC is a village in Dronten that houses 1,000 asylum seekers. Many people living here would like to do something. This is how the idea of the AZC Klusbus was born. We offer our residents useful daytime activities and help people in Dronten who could use it.
