Elevation
The family business builds between 30 and 40 houseboats every year. Completely by hand. In a large covered industrial hall, the water homes are finished entirely indoors in conditioned rooms. The premises are located on the canal and, via the Urkersluis lock, the finished houseboats sail via the IJsselmeer to their new owner. Nice detail: the houseboats are then pumped up 5.5 metres. After all, in Flevoland we live and work on the former seabed and you really notice this in the lock.

Living on the water is more popular than ever. And they notice this at ABC Waterwoningen in Urk. 'Water enough in Flevoland, let's use it more for living,' says Johan van Domselaar. 'Every new housing estate should have water storage, why not combine that with floating homes right away?' There is another advantage, he says: it is an ideal solution for places where the ground is too bad for housing.
Holiday feeling every day
The Urker company builds floating homes for the recreational sector, for new housing estates and replaces existing ones for new ones, as well as floating office buildings and petrol stations, for example. 'There is a lot of demand for that. In general, we see that a lot of people want to live differently. Detached, but no garden, but space.' The same applies to Rien de Kloet and Marianne Kramer, who live in a houseboat built by ABC Waterwoningen in Lelystad's new housing estate Warande. 'A holiday feeling every day!'
Pure craft and innovation
At ABC Waterwoningen, pure craftsmanship and the latest technology flow together effortlessly. 'Good insulation has always been important in our industry, because you build on the water and of course you don't want a draught in your floating home. We always say: the jacket (the walls and the roof) of a houseboat should be well insulated. Sustainability is now becoming even more important, especially for your energy bill. We are constantly looking at how things can be done better. With love for the job. Living on the water is magical.'
