It takes guts, building an entire new Dutch province from scratch. Yet that is how Flevoland came to be, man-made land, 6 meters below sea level, building major cities like Almere and Lelystad. The result of decades of impressive engineering. Flevoland is never finished. That's because of that twentieth-century soil beneath their feet, surrounded by water. Where the sea became land
Flevoland, created from three reclaimed polders that together form the largest man-made land in the world, is a place where the impossible becomes possible. Born from the former Zuiderzee, it combines human ingenuity with wild nature: from its straight fields, roads, and waterways to thriving wetlands and the vast deciduous forests that have taken root in the designed landscape. Even the surrounding waters are transforming, with projects such as the Marker Wadden inviting new life to the Markermeer. In Flevoland, innovation and resilience go hand in hand: when the wind blows, we build wind turbines; when a dike needs strengthening, we invent new ways to do it. Modern, spacious, and unmistakably unique. Flevoland is a land like no other.

Marker Wadden: when dead water meets new life
Marker Wadden is a modern icon of Dutch hydraulic engineering, showcasing innovation with global appeal. It embodies the progressive spirit of the Netherlands, in Nieuw Land National Park. A group of artificial islands built from the lake’s own materials is revitalising a once-dying lake. With its extensive land-water transitions, new habitats emerge, creating vital spaces that support aquatic life and restore the ecological health of the Marker Lake.
