The story of 40 years of Flevoland province
In 2026, Flevoland province will be 40 years old. And we will celebrate it! We look back, and especially forward. Because that's how we are here. Proud of who we are: six municipalities with their own faces, but together one province. Flevoland Province is formed from the sea and built with guts. With our own hands we make space to live, grow, dream and do. This is where it happens; we remain pioneers with ideas, forever on the move. As we have been for 40 years.

The story of Flevoland
It takes guts, building an entire province from scratch. Yet that is how Flevoland came to be: man-made land, more than four metres below sea level, protected by kilometres of dykes. And Flevoland is never finished. That's because of that twentieth-century ground underfoot. That does something to the people who live, work and study here. Nowhere is there more room for new ideas than here. Because Flevolanders know: the sky is the limit.

Our history
Flevoland's history is unique. It is the very largest reclamation project in the world. Unbelievable that 100 years ago there was only sea here, the Zuiderzee. With little islands here and there, like Schokland and Urk. Dry land among all that wet. On the islands and on the mainland, people knew: the sea gives and the sea takes. The damage was not limited to the ships at sea. The land also suffered.
