Care in Flevoland

Flevoland. Conceived land. Made by human hands. On that new land, a society arose, where inhabitants worked together to create something valuable. And above all: pursued their dreams. And Flevolanders still do: Lucia, Marjan and Timo care for other people with the same focus and passion. They do so through Zorghart Flevoland. They find room in Flevoland to realise their ambitions in care and welfare.

Doing something good

Timo Bot knows better than anyone what it's like to be addicted and completely grounded. He turned to booze and drugs to numb his emotions. Until he really ended up in a deep, black hole. With no job, no income and no education. Now he helps others get rid of their addiction. Timo does this at IrisZorg. This organisation provides addiction care and social care in Lelystad. For a long time, I didn't know what I wanted. I tried lots of things. I didn't really feel a connection with anything. Except with care. I can now use my experiences for someone else and, as a result, my past is no longer just negative.'

Making care more personal

Marjan Visser from Emmeloord jumped into the deep end. She followed the lateral entry trajectory at care organisation Coloriet and is now a specialised caregiver in psychogeriatrics. 'When my husband died fourteen years ago, I only realised how important care is.' She now cares for elderly people with dementia. 'I really like giving warm care. To get to know our residents like this and also realise that it is the disease that does something to people.'

Care and welfare

Care is reflected in everything Lucia Fer from Lelystad does: in her work, her family and in her leisure time. As a community worker at welfare organisation De Schoor in Almere, she ensures that residents experience more well-being in their lives. 'When residents come to me with a problem, there is often much more at play.' Sometimes the water is really up to their lips, Lucia notices. Her motivation? 'Making sure you are comfortable in your own skin, that you are self-reliant and can pick up things that come your way.' The same applies to Lucia personally. 'I love walking and fortunately there is plenty of that in Flevoland. 'It is a beautiful province with lots of nature and beautiful paths and forests to walk. That's where I connect with nature.'

Chasing dreams

What these three healthcare professionals have in common? They get all the space they need in the country's newest province to pursue their dreams. Whether that is connecting care and welfare, making elderly care more personal or more experience expertise within care. Timo: 'The great thing about working in care is that I can always do something good.' Lucia: 'In between the hard work, grab moments, try to enjoy yourself, of a smile. As long as you can do that, you do keep working in care.' Marjan: 'Getting to know people, seeing them happy and accompanying them in the last phase of their lives, that's what makes me keep doing this work.'
