Once upon a time, Flevoland was sea. The source of income for many villages around the Zuiderzee, including Urk. After reclamation, there were fears that Urk would have to abandon fishing. But nothing could be further from the truth. The Urk fish trade continued, building innovative seaworthy ships and setting sail for the North Sea.Urk grew into a world-class fish distribution centre.The former islanders are therefore only too proud of their ´Wonder of Urk´.
