Floating deltas
Due to the rapidly growing world population, it is already estimated that humanity will run short of farmland by 2050. This could lead to a world food problem, which is where the Floating Islands initiative comes in. With an entirely new way of growing food: on water. Currently, the innovative Floating Islands initiative is being followed up under the heading 'Floating Deltas'.
Deep water hydroponics
During Floriade 2022, a prototype of the Floating Farm was presented: a floating island that grows vegetables on water. The food is grown using the 'deep water hydroponics' method. Project manager Saria de Olde: "We started by growing large heads of pak choi, on the Weerwater near Almere. Now we are also trying other vegetables and interest in our floating cultivation is now worldwide, from Congo to Shanghai. Our dream is that every major city can provide its own food in this way.''
Inextricably linked
Floating Deltas is inextricably linked to Flevoland in many ways. For instance, the project is run from the Praktijk- en Innovatiecentrum Circulaire Economie for Flevoland entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions in Almere. There is also plenty of cooperation with the educational institution Aeres (University of Applied Sciences and MBO), the Utopia Island in Almere where organic agriculture is demonstrated and Food Pioneers in Almere (research and education). The support from Province of Flevoland has made all the difference, says project manager Saria De Olde. ''Flevoland is literally and figuratively our testing ground, we get people from all over the world visiting us.''
