Picturesque living is possible in the old part of Urk. Anyone who sees the small houses in the old village cannot imagine that families with as many as 6, 8 or 10 children used to live there. Now the houses are especially popular with young families, singles and older couples.
Apart from old Urk, the other part of Urk consists of new housing developments where Urk's younger population in particular lives. But an Urkian is hospitable and everyone is welcome. As a result, the new housing estates fill up quickly, and it's urgent when a few more plots are sold by the municipality. With the construction of the Zeehelden neighbourhood, space is opening up again on Urk, so be quick.

Born and raised
Rense is the third generation of Bakker. He was born and raised in the lighthouse house next to the lighthouse. Following his grandfather and father, Rense now lives there with his family. 'My grandfather was very loyal to his work; my father was more light-hearted. He always joked that he had the highest position in all of Urk, lighthouse keeper. The position no longer exists now. Still, I feel responsible to continue their work. I have a connection with this place.'

Cosiness
Urk's location on the IJsselmeer also makes it a popular spot for water recreation. Several cycling and hiking routes can be found on Urk. For example, in the Urk forest and along the dike to Lemmer.And of course, Urk has a cosy old village centre, with boutiques, a harbour and several restaurants.
